Earth-Friendly Gagdets

Eco-mower

03 Sep 2008

Many tend to the false assumption that a tiny machine like a personal mower doesn’t make much of a difference in contributing to the earth’s pollution. In reality, though, 2-cycle engines found on most power mowers, blowers, and weed-eaters contribute up 5-10% of the air pollution in Southern cities.

The German designed eco-mower known as the Brill Razorcut 38 is safe and quiet. Push mowers like this one are all-around good: for your environment, lawn and body. Weighing only 17 pounds, this model is among the easiest to use, as it runs on manpower and blades alone. Burn calories while you tend your garden, and take a little pride in an activity many neighbors avoid.

Twelve-year-old Girl from Virgina with a Great Gadget Design

19 Aug 2008

Elizabeth Rintels competed against great ideas nationwide when she won the “BKFK Going Green Challenge”.

Congratulation Elizabeth from us at BGM, you have made the Monster very happy today :-)

The BKFK is a competition designed to stimulate youth to create new products or services that could help the global environmental crisis. The challenge awarded $10,000 and a real life experience to the top idea to someone between the ages of 6 and 19 for solving our most pressing environmental issues, including global warming, drought, famine and flooding.

Elizabeth R., age 12, won the Going Green Challenge for her “Water Watcher”. Realizing just how much water it took to take a shower, Elizabeth began seeking a way to make everyone more aware of their water usage. After learning that reducing her shower time only by one minute would save 1,000 gallons of water per year, she was driven to find a smarter way of utilizing this valuable resource. Elizabeth created “The Water Watcher”, a device that can be fastened to any faucet. It signals a red light and sounds a beep every time a half-gallon of water is used. Elizabeth hopes this will lead to more conscientious use of water in everyday life.

Nokia Morph Green Phone Concept

14 Jul 2008

Launched alongside The Museum of Modern Art’s “Design and The Elastic Mind” exhibition, the Morph concept device is a bridge between highly advanced technologies and their potential benefits to end-users. This device concept showcases some revolutionary leaps being explored by Nokia Research Center (NRC) in collaboration with the Cambridge Nanoscience Centre (United Kingdom) – nanoscale technologies that will potentially create a world of radically different devices that open up an entirely new spectrum of possibilities.

Morph concept technologies might create fantastic opportunities for mobile devices:

• Newly-enabled flexible and transparent materials blend more seamlessly with the way we live

• Devices become self-cleaning and self-preserving

• Transparent electronics offering an entirely new aesthetic dimension.

• Built-in solar absorption might charge a device, while batteries become smaller, longer lasting and faster to charge.

• Integrated sensors might allow us to learn more about the environment around us, empowering us to make better choices.

In addition to the advances above, the integrated electronics shown in the Morph concept could cost less and include more functionality in a much smaller space, even as interfaces are simplified and usability is enhanced. All of these new capabilities will unleash new applications and services that will allow us to communicate and interact in unprecedented ways.

Bamboo, the Degradable Mobile Phone - Nominee Best Cell Phone Concept Made by Gert-Jan van Breugel - Netherlands

17 Jun 2008

Called the Bamboo, this bio-degradable cell phone concept is an entry in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008.  Its casing is made of bio-plastic made of recyclable natural resources like corn and bamboo.  After you decide not to use the phone anymore, you can bury the print board, battery and antenna which upon bio-degradation will release bamboo seeds and potentially new plants.  The phone will also feature an energy-efficient monochrome display and a hand-crank with which to re-charge the device.  A 3-minute cranking session could provide enough power for one phone call.
